I’ve always been a fan of the preppy, casual but polished look that so many pull off with ease
For as long as I can remember, I’ve admired the guys and gals who rock the preppy look flawlessly. A-line skirts, brogues and pinstriped shirts, they’re all very reminiscent of American TV shows such as Gossip Girl. Personally, I wouldn’t be one for wearing outfits as OTT as that but I do like taking inspiration from these looks.
Someone who does the preppy look well is style icon, Alexa Chung. She consistently looks polished, stylish yet never as if she’s trying too hard. When creating this look I wanted to keep true to my own personal style whilst tying in those preppy attributes I love so much.
The shirt is probably the most important piece of this look. I absolutely adore this shirt too. I’ve had it since I was about 14, when my aunt gave me one of my uncle’s old Ralph Lauren shirts. It’s an absolute classic piece and a pinstriped shirt is an absolute staple item for anyone’s wardrobe. As this is a men’s shirt I’m able to play up the oversized shirt trend and keep comfy whilst looking smart.
Well Fitted Chinos
A well fitted pair of trousers are another staple item in my eyes. I picked these up in Zara 3 years ago and they’re still as good as the day I bought them. The fit is tight but comfortable and the ankle length compliments a broad range of shoe styles, whether it’s heels, brogues or trainers. The camel tone keeps the outfit fresh and light, if I were to have opted for a dark trouser the outfit would have looked completely different!
Ah, the shoes. These shoes are my latest star buy. I’ve recently been humming and hawing about getting a pair of Adidas Superstars or Stan Smiths but I just couldn’t justify it, especially when I have such a tight budget. I saw these at the Primark AW16 press day and was so impressed with them. I picked them up a few weeks ago for €11 and now I’m so happy I didn’t waste my money. I chose these shoes over brogues as I wanted to give this outfit a more relaxed, casual feel. Who knows what I’m up to, I could be going to an event or I could be popping down to the shops!
I threw my favourite waterfall coat from Pretty Little Thing on before I left the house and I think it turned out pretty well. The tightly fitting chinos and the flowing coat gives an interesting but flattering silhouette.
